Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner for Fountain Pens

An essential tool for all fountain pen hobbyists is an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. At some point in time, your pen will clog. It’s a matter of when and not if. When dealing with a clogged nib-feed-section assembly, a cleaner will remove the dried ink particles within minutes. The alternative is to soak the assembly in water for a day or even longer. With assemblies that have been clogged for a very long time, soaking alone may not work.

For my needs, I use a Brookstone Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner that I found in a thrift shop. (See the photos.)

I place the clogged section in the removable tray. Fill the cleaner with water until the parts are covered, close the cover, and adjust the settings. My cleaner has three degrees of intensity. I usually use the 3rd, the strongest. The timer can also be adjusted from 180-to-480 seconds (3-to-8 minutes). I go with 480.

After the first cycle, the water is dark with the color of ink used. I empty the water, refill, and run a second cycle to make sure the assembly is clean. Usually, the water the second time around is almost completely clear, indicating that all the gunk is gone.

I then use a bulb syringe to blow water out of the assembly.

I haven’t tried any of the other ultrasonic jewelry cleaners, but my guess is that they all work pretty much the same and are just as if not more effective.

Opus 88 Koloro Demonstrator: Massive Eyedropper Fountain Pen

Appearance & construction: (very good)
Performance: stars4-h021 (very good)

L-R: Pilot Petit1, Pilot Prera Iro-Ai, Pilot Metropolitan, Opus 88, Platinum Preppy, TWSBI Diamond Mini

The Opus 88 Koloro Demonstrator is a huge pen! See the comparison photos above. But it feels and writes light. It’s very comfortable in my hand for long writing sessions — which is exactly why I ordered this eyedropper with a massive ink capacity.

I ordered the “F” fine nib, but found it’s more like a very very wet medium. I switched in a Nemosine (Germany) #6 “EF” extra-fine nib and solved the problem. The section-nib came out easily with a gentle wiggle and pull. When replacing the section-nib, turn lightly until you find the original groove. It slides back in smoothly without much pressure. As always, handle section-nibs gently. Don’t force anything. Feel for the natural lay of the section-nib in the barrel.

When I first started writing with the EF, it was dry and thin, but it’s beginning to get slightly wetter the more I write. In any case, the original F nib was so wet and thick that it seemed to negate the advantage of a massive ink reservoir.

I’m using Noodler’s Heart of Darkness as my primary ink supply. I opted to use a syringe instead of the eyedropper that’s built into the bottle cap. The syringe can hold a lot more ink and is more precise.

Reviewers have been critical of the number of turns it takes to uncap/cap the pen. I don’t find it a problem. For me, it’s reassurance that it’s precision engineered and less liable to leak ink. I actually enjoy the slightly longer turns.

Some have also criticized the inability to post the cap, but as many have pointed out, posting would offset the balance of this already long pen. Posting would also interfere with the visual flow of the pen, altering the design of the lower finial to accommodate the cap. I usually don’t post, even with the tiny Petit1. (My hands are of average size.) I’ve found that posting, over time, could scar the barrel. Posting also creates discomfort when the clip isn’t aligned correctly.

The piston shut-off valve takes getting used to. In my first attempt, I put in too much ink and twisting the piston valve close forced ink out of the feed, creating a small mess. With a bit less ink, the problem didn’t recur. This shut-off valve is a godsend for travel and long writing sessions that might cause burps.

If you unscrew the piston shut-off valve from the barrel for cleaning, be sure to reapply silicone grease to the threads as needed.

Replacement o-rings: I’m anticipating the need to replace the o-rings at some point in the future. If you know about a source or the type(s) of o-rings I’ll need, please post the info in the comments section below. Thanks in advance.

Update 1/24/19 11:33 PM: Just discovered a fantastic feature of this pen — just when I was thinking I had found a major flaw. The ink has been leaking into the cap, and the overall effect for a clear demonstrator was awful. With pen in hand and wondering how to get the gunk out, I realized that the top finial is screwed in. Unscrewing it was tough, but I got it off with a piece of friction cloth (a must have for pen maintenance). Once removed, I had clear access to the ink stains. Cleaned it out in no time. I screwed the finial back on and now have the look I was first attracted to. This is a fabulous feature for demonstrators. Ink in the cap is always unsightly. Engineering a means to clean it is a stroke of genius.

Update 2/27/19 3:42 PM: Here’s a review I submitted to JetPens on 2/27/19: “It’s a lot messier than I’d expected, with ink leaking into the cover when not in use and ink flowing out of the feed when closing the valve. With a demonstrator version, the ink in the cover is distracting. This pen takes getting used to, and I’m still learning. I’m not sure if the nib mod I made — from stock F to a replacement Jowo #5 EF Nemosine #6 EF — is causing the problems, but I don’t think so. To counter the slow leak into the cover, I keep the pen sitting upright when not in use.” This issue downgrades performance from 4.5 to 4. The EF performance in writing is still excellent.

Preliminary rating: Appearance & construction: (very good); Performance: stars4-h021 (very good).

Bulb Syringe: Essential Tool for All Fountain Pen Users

The blue bulb syringe is a little under 5" in length.

The blue bulb syringe is a little under 5″ in length. The blue is for wider section openings. Together, they cover my small fountain pen collection.

If you’re using or planning to use a fountain pen, a bulb syringe is an essential tool for unclogging the section unit, which includes the nib and feed. They can be found in drug stores and usually sold for irrigating the ear or clearing the nasal passage for around $5-10 U.S.

You’ll need to cut off the tip to get it to fit snugly in the section opening. Cut back in very small increments until it fits snugly. If you have a lot of fountain pens, then I’d suggest at least 2 syringes. One for narrow and another for wide section openings. See the photo above.

A single load of water is more than sufficient to flush out the gunk and run clear. Be sure to keep the fit snug to avoid spraying water and ink all over the place.

You could use a converter to flush the nib unit, but the process is slow, time consuming, and not very effective if the gunk build-up is thick, wedged in, or dry. The advantage of the syringe is the large amount of water and pressure that’s forced through the nib unit. It quickly clears the channels.

If the water from the syringe doesn’t penetrate through the nib unit or dribbles instead of gushes, then the gunk has probably solidified, and you’ll need to either soak the unit for a  day or more or pull the nib/feed from the section and manually floss the channel with a brass shim. You could then follow up with a syringe flush.

After flushing, to quickly dry the nib unit, empty the syringe and use it to blow air through the section unit. Do this a few times and the water will be expelled.

Most pens will need to be flushed at some point, but the fact that a particular pen has to be flushed often is a sign that it’s a poor pen. In general, most of my cheap China pens fall in this category. The nib/feed dries up regularly after a day or two and won’t write. Only a flush will get it flowing.

In my modest collection, the best pens in terms of quick starting are the Japanese pens Sailor and Pilot. Across the board, from medium- to low-priced (I don’t have any high-priced pens), they start immediately even after days or weeks of sitting idle. German pens, in general, are excellent starters, too. The Lamy Safari is fine, but the Vista is a hardstarter.

Other popular pens in my collection such as Monteverde Artista, Nemosine Fission and Singularity, Waterman Kultur, and Twsbi (Eco, Diamond Mini, Vac-Mini) are in-between. They tend to hardstart after sitting idle for a few days.

A fountain pen that can’t be relied upon to write on demand is basically useless. Thus, at this point in time, my recommendation for a reliable fountain pen would be Sailor or Pilot.

The Sailor Lecoule reminds me of an old Esterbrook in appearance. At $26, it outperforms nearly all my other pens in the same price range and higher. It’s always started instantly with a steady ink flow.

The Pilot Metropolitan, at almost half the price ($14.50 U.S.), is just as reliable. However, it’s bigger and heavier than the Lecoule, limiting its mobility.

Interestingly, both the Lecoule and the Metropolitan are opaque and unlike the clear demonstrators that I prefer in terms of looks. The opaque pens don’t have the same visual wow appeal. However, they seem to have an advantage in preventing drying. Then again, the China pens are nearly all opaque and still dry out quickly.

Apparently, the design and engineering of the nib/feed/section unit is the key to a good pen, and the best manufacturers stand far above the rest.

If you own or plan to buy a Japanese or German fountain pen, you should probably still have a bulb syringe handy to flush the nib section since all pens will eventually dry up if left unused for a long enough time.

TWSBI Vac Mini Fountain Pen – Extra Fine Nib from JetPens. $65 FS. Ordered 4/20/16. Arrived 4/23/16.

Review: JetPens service and delivery, as usual, outstanding.

Appearance & construction: The Twsbi Vac-Mini EF comes very close to perfection. Looks and engineering are outstanding. Similar to the Diamond Mini but a 3rd of an inch longer. It looks and feels like a precision instrument. I like the size and heft — not heavy but solid. It’s a comfortable fit for me while writing. It’s less than perfect in two related areas — the threading for posting and the piston knob. Here, precision suffers. Getting the clip on the screw-on posted cap to align with the top of the nib is difficult if not impossible. Because of the shorter barrel, posting is probably necessary for most writers, and the clip could feel uncomfortable resting against the hollow at the base of the thumb.

Brass Shims: Buy a Roll and Save

If you’re like me and beginning to get deeper into fountain pens as a hobby, then you’re probably well aware of brass shims, those indispensable squares of thin (.002) brass sheets that allow you to floss the slit in your nibs and the channel in your feeds. They’re usually sold in tiny squares or rectangles, roughly 2-to-3 inches to a side. They’re not expensive, but they cost enough to force you to be conservative in your use. You wait until each corner and edge is bent and crinkled to where they can no longer fit in the breather hole or the slit at the point before cutting back on the sheet to expose a usable corner or edge.

Nemosine Fission and Jinhao x750: Very Similar

Updated 3/24/16
Fission and JHx750
The Nemosine Fission Jet Black in the photo above was the first non-China pen I ordered online, and it remains one of my favorites. (Click here for info on the China pens I’m reviewing.) I like the precision feel of the screw-in cap and posting as well as the heft. This is a full-metal, industrial strength pen built to last. The only problem was the EF that I had selected. It was too dry for me.

Efforts to correct this problem took me on quite a journey. I swapped in a Nemosine M to counter the dryness and ended up at the other extreme — soggy wet. I next swapped in a Nemosine F, which should have been the perfect fit. I had swapped M for F in my Nemosine Singularity and got a satisfactory result, an F that’s more like a Japanese M.  Continue reading
